Looking for a new show to binge and having trouble cutting through the noise? If you trust industry voters, the Emmy nominations can be a good place to start.
Leading the charge this year is FX’s “Shogun,” which scored a stunning 25 nominations (including limited series) and scored first-time acting nominations for stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai. FX landed 93 noms all together — helped also by the record-breaking 23 nominations (the most in Emmy history) for its comedy series “The Bear.”
If you’re looking for more of a laugh, Max’s “Hacks” and “Curb Your Enthusiam” also received nods, in addition to ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” and Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” which earned Selena Gomez her first Emmy nomination this week.
Below, check out every show nominated for an Emmy this year — and where to stream them online.
-
'The Crown'
Where to Stream: Netflix
Emmy Nominations (18): Drama Series; Lead Actor (Dominic West); Lead Actress (Imelda Staunton); Supporting Actress (Elizabeth Debicki); Supporting Actress (Lesley Manville); Supporting Actor (Jonathan Pryce); Guest Actress (Claire Foy); Production Design; Casting; Cinematography; Contemporary Costumes; Directing; Fantasy/Sci-Fi Makeup; Music Composition; Sound Mixing; Writing
Variety review: “From the beginning, “The Crown” has worked to make compelling drama from ingredients that are often its antithesis: consistency over novelty, obligation over desire, stoicism over expressiveness. If it hasn’t always succeeded, “The Crown” at least concludes as the truest version of itself.”
-
'Fallout'
Where to Stream: Prime Video
Emmy Nominations (16): Drama Series; Lead Actor (Walter Goggins); Production Design; Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes; Picture Editing; Emerging Media Program; Main Title Design; Period or Sci-Fi/Fantasy Makeup; Prosthetic Makeup; Music Supervision; Sound Editing; Sound Mixing; Special Visual Effects; Stunt Coordination; Writing
Variety Review: “Bizarre but intensely fun, ‘Fallout’ is like nothing you’ve ever seen; for that reason alone, you won’t be able to turn away.”
-
'The Gilded Age'
Where to Stream: Max
Emmy Nominations (5): Drama Series; Lead Actress (Carrie Coon); Supporting Actress (Christine Baranski); Production Design; Period Costumes
Variety Review: “Just because ‘The Gilded Age’ knows it has to broaden its horizons doesn’t mean it pursues all its elements with the same passion or aptitude. It’s clear which story points come from enthusiasm and which from obligation; while “Downton Abbey” was more evenly split between upstairs and down, “The Gilded Age” has never paid as much attention to the help as those hiring them.”
-
'The Morning Show'
Where to Stream: Apple TV+
Emmy Nominations (16): Drama Series; Lead Actress (Jennifer Aniston); Lead Actress (Reese Witherspoon); Supporting Actress (Nicole Beharie); Supporting Actress (Greta Lee); Supporting Actress (Karen Pittman); Supporting Actress (Holland Taylor); Supporting Actor (Billy Crudup); Supporting Actor (Mark Duplass); Supporting Actor (Jon Hamm); Guest Actress (Marcia Gay Harden); Production Design; Casting; Directing; Contemporary Hairstyling
Variety Review: “Before long, ‘The Morning Show’; is back to its old tricks, building to a conclusion that’s short on coherence, long on overacted theatrics, and despite it all, a total delight to watch. Technically, “The Morning Show” remains as flawed as ever.”
-
'Mr. and Mrs. Smith'
Where to Stream: Prime Video
Emmy Nominations (2): Drama Series; Lead Actress (Maya Erskine)
Variety Review: “With a few extra hours of runtime, ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ builds John, Jane and their relationship into something worth caring about. This version may not make as many headlines as its predecessor, but it stands up far better to scrutiny.”
-
'Shōgun'
Where to Stream: Hulu
Emmy Nominations (25): Drama Series; Lead Actor (Hiroyuki Sanada); Lead Actress (Anna Sawai); Supporting Actor (Tadanobu Asano); Supporting Actor (Takehiro Hira); Guest Actor (Néstor Carbonell); Production Design; Casting; Cinematography; Period Costumes; Directing; Picture Editing; Main Title Design; Period or Fantasy/Sci-Fi Makeup; Prosthetic Makeup; Music Composition; Main Title Theme Music; Sound Editing; Sound Mixing; Special Visual Effects; Writing
Variety Review: “There are superficial similarities to ‘Game of Thrones’ — five contenders for an empty throne, a storyline about two girlhood friends on opposite sides of a power struggle. But it’s this focus on people that truly unites the two series, and qualifies “Shōgun” to take up the mantle of thrillingly transportive event TV.”
-
'Slow Horses'
Where to Stream: Apple TV+
Emmy Nominations (8): Lead Actor (Gary Oldman); Supporting Actor (Jack Lowden); Guest Actor (Jonathan Pryce); Casting; Directing; Picture Editing; Music Composition; Writing
Variety Review: “You can see that show’s influence in ‘Slow Horses’ moments of black comedy, but this show has a soul that ‘Veep’ never had. We glimpse actual humanity in some of Lamb’s more benevolent antics.”
-
'3 Body Problem'
Where to Stream: Netflix
Emmy Nominations (6): Drama Series; Cinematography; Picture Editing; Main Title Design; Sound Editing; Sound Mixing
Variety Review: “‘3 Body Problem’ is ultimately about an asymmetrical war that pits humankind against adversaries we can neither see nor understand. All the more important, then, to make one side of the exchange indelible enough to carry a show on their own.”
-
'Abbott Elementary'
Where to Stream: Hulu
Emmy Nominations: Comedy Series; Lead Actress (Quinta Brunson); Supporting Actress (Janelle James); Supporting Actress (Sheryl Lee Ralph); Supporting Actor (Tyler James Williams); Casting; Directing; Contemporary Hairstyling; Sound Mixing; Writing
Variety Review: “While the humor in the series remains heartfelt, viewers might start to see why a maturing and less wide-eyed Janine may eventually find it too emotionally exhausting to continue on in the classroom. For decades, teachers have been begging to be seen, and Season 3 of ‘Abbott Elementary’ has tasked itself with truly pulling back the veil.”
-
'The Bear'
Where to Stream: Hulu
Emmy Nominations (23): Comedy Series; Lead Actor (Jeremy Allen White); Supporting Actress (Ayo Edebiri); Supporting Actress (Liza Colón-Zayas); Supporting Actor (Lionel Boyce); Supporting Actor (Ebon Moss-Bachrach); Guest Actor (Jon Bernthal); Guest Actor (Bob Odenkirk); Guest Actor (Will Poulter); Guest Actress (Olivia Coleman); Guest Actress (Jamie Lee Curtis); Production Design; Casting; Cinematography; Contemporary Costumes; Directing; Picture Editing; Contemporary Hairstyling; Contemporary Makeup; Sound Editing; Sound Mixing; Writing
Variety Review: “‘The Bear’ takes a step down in an aimless Season 3 that relies too heavily on star power.”
-
'Curb Your Enthusiasm'
Where to Stream: Max
Emmy Nominations (4): Comedy Series; Lead Actor (Larry David); Casting; Sound Mixing
Variety Review: “The show’s on-the-fly nature — with its wholly improvised conversations built around the loose outline of a plot — effectively invented a category of entertainment, but also means that the show is by its nature a blunt instrument. Larry and his friends are loopily, outrageously funny; they live out loud; they play games of one-upsmanship that are genuinely delightful to watch. But they are rarely sly.”
-
'Hacks'
Where to Stream: Max
Emmy Nominations (16): Comedy Series; Lead Actress (Jean Smart); Supporting Actress (Hannah Einbinder); Supporting Actor (Paul W. Downs); Guest Actor (Christopher Lloyd); Guest Actress (Kaitlin Olson); Production Design; Casting; Cinematography; Contemporary Costumes; Directing; Picture Editing; Contemporary Hairstyling; Contemporary Makeup; Sound Mixing; Writing
Variety Review: “Like a performer with Deborah’s grit and experience, ‘Hacks’ is infectiously confident, deceptively smooth and, most importantly, consistently hilarious.”
-
'Only Murders in the Building'
Where to Stream: Hulu
Emmy Nominations (21): Comedy Series; Lead Actor (Steve Martin); Lead Actor (Martin Short); Lead Actress (Selena Gomez); Supporting Actress (Meryl Streep); Supporting Actor (Paul Rudd); Guest Actor (Matthew Broderick); Guest Actress (Da’Vine Joy Randolph); Short Form Comedy; Production Design; Casting; Choreography; Contemporary Costumes; Picture Editing; Contemporary Hairstyling; Contemporary Makeup; Music Composition; Original Music; Music Supervision; Sound Editing; Sound Mixing
Variety Review: “With Season 3, ‘Only Murders in the Building’ no longer needs to establish itself or even prove it can follow up on its own success. Nor does it have to navigate the ethical dilemma of the true crime genre it satirizes, in which grisly misfortune becomes soothing entertainment. Instead, the show is free to cash in on its status with stars of Streep’s caliber, then integrate those actors into a story that increasingly has the makings of an adaptable institution.”
-
'Palm Royale'
Where to Stream: Apple TV+
Emmy Nominations (11): Comedy Series; Lead Actress (Kristen Wiig); Supporting Actress (Carole Burnett); Production Design; Choreography; Period Costumes; Main Title Design; Period or Fantasy/Sci-Fi Makeup; Music Composition; Original Main Title
Variety Review: “From pawn shops and bounced checks to a near-continuous cycle of President Nixon discussing the Vietnam War on televisions playing in the background, ‘Palm Royale’ is ridiculous fun.”
-
'Reservation Dogs'
Where to Stream: Hulu
Emmy Nominations (4): Comedy Series; Lead Actor (D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai); Cinematography; Picture Editing
Variety Review: “’Reservation Dogs’ has the privilege of ending on its own terms, a rare opportunity at a chaotic and uncertain time in entertainment. It does so having shifted the parameters of what’s possible to put on-screen, a daunting legacy to leave and an exciting preview of what could come — whether from Harjo, his collaborators or new talent inspired by their mainstream success.”
-
'What We Do in the Shadows'
Where to Stream: Hulu
Emmy Nominations (8): Comedy Series; Lead Actor (Matt Berry); Production Design; Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes; Picture Editing; Sound Mixing; Stunt Coordination; Writing
Variety Review: “Kayvan Novak, Natasia Demetrious, and Matt Berry are witty, engaging company as three eternal beings whose vanities run up against the banal reality of trying to find fresh blood and to conquer a local populace that seems pleasantly impervious; they whine and natter, as we know they’ve been doing for decades or centuries.”
-
'Baby Reindeer'
Where to Stream: Netflix
Emmy Nominations (11): Limited Series; Lead Actor (Richard Gadd); Supporting Actress (Jessica Gunning); Supporting Actress (Nava Mau); Supporting Actor (Tom Goodman-Hill); Casting; Contemporary Costume; Directing; Picture Editing; Music Supervision; Writing
Variety Review: “Shocking, hilarious, painful and devastating, ‘Baby Reindeer’ is a rare gem on television, reminding us of what is possible in the medium. “Baby Reindeer” opens as Donny walks into a London police station. Frazzled and exhausted, he explains that an unstable woman has been stalking him for months.”
-
'Fargo'
Where to Stream: Hulu
Emmy Nominations (15): Limited Series; Lead Actor (Jon Hamm); Lead Actress (Juno Temple); Supporting Actor (Lamorne Morris); Production Design; Casting; Cinematography; Contemporary Costumes; Directing; Picture Editing; Music Composition; Music Supervision; Sound Editing; Sound Mixing; Writing
Variety Review: “‘Fargo’ is a testament to the value of creativity within constraints, reworking a 27-year-old movie into a living text. It’s an experiment that works better when it doesn’t explicitly argue for its own continued relevance.”
-
'Lessons in Chemistry'
Where to Stream: Apple TV+
Emmy Nominations (10): Limited Series; Lead Actress (Brie Larson); Supporting Actress (Aja Naomi King); Supporting Actor (Lewis Pullman); Cinematography; Period Costumes; Directing; Main Title Design; Music Composition; Original Main Title Theme Music
Variety Review: “Larson and Pullman bring a meeting of the minds into the material world. Their scenes of two kindred spirits resonating on a particular, personal frequency make you want to see more of them both — or in Larson’s case, more of this side of her.”
-
'Ripley'
Where to Stream: Netflix
Emmy Nominations (13): Limited Series; Lead Actor (Ripley Scott); Supporting Actress (Dakota Fanning); Production Design; Casting; Cinematography; Period Costumes; Directing; Picture Editing; Sound Editing; Sound Mixing; Special Visual Effects; Writing
Variety Review: “Ultimately, ‘Ripley’ fails to offer a new or intriguing perspective on the infamous scammer.”
-
'True Detective: Night Country'
Where to Stream: Max
Emmy Nominations (19): Limited Series; Lead Actress (Jodie Foster); Supporting Actress (Kali Reis); Supporting Actor (John Hawkes); Production Design; Casting; Cinematography; Contemporary Costumes; Directing; Picture Editing; Contemporary Makeup; Prosthetic Makeup; Original Music; Music Supervision; Sound Editing; Sound Mixing; Special Visual Effects; Writing
Variety Review: “The fourth season of ‘True Detective,” subtitled ‘Night Country,’ is both a sharp break from the show’s past and an implicit response to its shortcomings. After a disastrous Season 2 and an improved, if understated, Season 3, Pizzolatto has fully ceded all showrunning duties, though he retains credit as an executive producer.
-
'Hijack'
Where to Stream: Apple TV+
Emmy Nominations: Lead Actor (Idris Elba)
Variety Review: “’Hijack,’ a new drama on Apple TV+, doesn’t precisely aim for the sort of thrills and chills “24” generated, but it is indeed another real-time drama about a terrorist plot. Unfortunately, the central device doesn’t quite work, and “Hijack” ends up feeling like a flight to nowhere in particular.”
-
'Loot'
Where to Stream: Apple TV+
Emmy Nominations: Lead Actress (Maya Rudolph)
Variety Review: “Even as it boasts the Apple gloss and budget (the music drops alone!), ‘Loot’ bears more than a few similarities to “Parks and Recreation,” the beloved NBC sitcom about fiercely loyal government employees that counted both Yang and Hubbard among its most stalwart writers.”
-
'Fellow Travelers'
Where to Stream: Paramount+
Emmy Nominations (3): Lead Actor (Matt Bomer); Supporting Actor (Jonathan Bailey); Writing
Variety Review: “A complex, intimate, captivating and visually stunning portrait of anguish and desire, ‘Fellow Travelers’ is an expansive tale set primarily at the height of the U.S. government’s war on communists, “subversives” and “sexual deviants” and ending amid the HIV/AIDS crisis in the 1980s.”
-
'Under the Bridge'
Where to Stream: Hulu
Emmy Nominations: Supporting Actress (Lily Gladstone)
Variety Review: “The series is a reminder of the anguish of rejection for teens, especially girls — and how that can manifest into something grotesque. Without proper guidance or a listening ear, the torment they inflict upon one another seems, in many ways, inevitable.”
-
'Blue Eye Samurai'
Where to Stream: Netflix
Emmy Nominations: Animated Program
-
'Bob's Burgers'
Where to Stream: Hulu
Emmy Nominations: Animated Program
-
'Scavengers Reign'
Where to Stream: Netflix
Emmy Nominations: Animated Program
Variety Review: “It pairs the engrossing ambience of a nature documentary with the propulsive thrust of narrative. Its characters are fully realized and flawed, but their main scene partners are an environment they need to intuit the workings of alongside the audience. The 12-episode season is a deep cut worth seeking out (or renewing, if you’re the powers that be and Warner Bros. Discovery):
-
'The Simpsons'
Where to Stream: Hulu
Emmy Nominations: Animated Program
-
'X-Men 97'
Where to Stream: Disney+
Emmy Nominations: Animated Program
Variety Review: “The series dedicate its energies to doing right by a nostalgia object while introducing itself to a new audience. And as off-canon animation, ‘X-Men ‘97’ can take bigger, wilder swings in its story, staying true to the fantastical nature of comics writing while remaining grounded in characters’ emotions.”
